She Was Never Here
sci-fi◐ TeenMara cuts the thread. The needle hums and the basement flickers. When the light steadies, the calendar on the wall reads Sunday. Saturday afternoon is just gone, like it never happened. She runs upstairs shouting Eli's name. He answers from the kitchen, alive, eating cereal. It worked. But he frowns at her and says, 'Why are you crying? Who's Eli?'
Mara decides not to push it. He's alive, and that's what counts. She watches him finish his cereal and leave for work, whole and breathing. That night the basement screen lights up on its own. A new red thread is forming, pointing at a different day. The machine is correcting itself. Mara sits down in the chair, calm now, and gets ready to fight for him all over again. She built this thing once. She can outlast it.
