She Was Never Here
sci-fi◐ TeenMara cuts the thread. The needle hums and the basement flickers. When the light steadies, the calendar on the wall reads Sunday. Saturday afternoon is just gone, like it never happened. She runs upstairs shouting Eli's name. He answers from the kitchen, alive, eating cereal. It worked. But he frowns at her and says, 'Why are you crying? Who's Eli?'
Mara grabs the cereal box and points at the photo on the fridge: her and Eli at the lake, both grinning. But in the photo, she's alone now. Just her, holding nothing. Cutting Saturday didn't only save him. It erased him from everyone's memory but hers. She's the only person who knows Eli is her brother.
What happens next?
2 ways forwardMara realizes she can't bring the memories back from up here. The answer is in the basement. She runs down, sits in the chair, and looks for a thread that ties Eli back to everyone. She finds it: a faded line, almost invisible, the bond that made him their brother. She tries to stitch it back into place.
