The red strand isn't random. Mara traces it back and finds the moment it begins: 3:14 p.m., when Eli gets a text and rushes out the door. She can't read the sender, but she sees his face change. Fear, then a decision. He's not just going for a walk. Someone is calling him to the river.
Mara can't reach the past, but she can warn the present. She charges upstairs and blocks Eli's phone before it buzzes. When 3:14 comes and no text arrives, Eli just shrugs and stays home. The red thread on the basement screen slowly fades to gray. She didn't cut time. She cut the message. And it worked.
