She Was Never Here

sci-fi◐ Teen
5 contributors · 4 paragraphs deep

Mara grabs the cereal box and points at the photo on the fridge: her and Eli at the lake, both grinning. But in the photo, she's alone now. Just her, holding nothing. Cutting Saturday didn't only save him. It erased him from everyone's memory but hers. She's the only person who knows Eli is her brother.

Mara decides being the only one who remembers is a price worth paying. Eli is alive. That's what matters. She keeps his photos in a shoebox under her bed and never tells him the truth. Years later, an old man at his wedding asks who she is. 'I'm his sister,' she says. Nobody else knows it's true, but she does, and that's enough.
