Mara grabbed a notebook and wrote, 'Don't touch the coil again.' She held it up. Two minutes later, Ines read it, nodded, and stepped back from the machine. It worked. They could talk, just slowly. Mara decided they would fix this together, one written message at a time.
Mara got impatient with the delay and tried mouthing words fast instead of writing. Ines couldn't read lips through the time lag, and her replies came back about a totally different question. They were arguing across two minutes about nothing. Mara forced herself to slow down and pick up the pen again.
