2125: Consciousness Escaped
sci-fi◐ TeenLove escaped the one-body rule. Our promises didn't. Sera got eleven months of work on Mars. So she forked. One Sera flew out. One stayed home, argued with me about music, helped me rebuild the garden. The Mars one sent memories home every night. The one beside me never opened them. Not once. We cooked her welcome-back dinner together. Door opens. Both Seras reach for my hand with the exact same smile. Then the traveler saw the unopened memories. Her: "I fell in love there." And someone else was standing in the hall.
The Sera who stayed refused the returning memories. All of them. Instead she offered her traveling fork something no marriage contract ever planned for: a new source. A new name. A life with the stranger. The traveler just stared at her. Split off, and she keeps her love — but every shared year before Mars becomes inherited history. Not a living source anymore. Traveler: "You would rather cut us in two than remember him?" Home Sera looked at me. I understood before she said it. "I'm trying to save the version of us that still loves my husband." She never asked if I wanted saving.
