'My grandmother took this bus every year on the first night of winter. Just the one night. She said it was her night.' I grip the wheel. 'What do you mean, was?' She doesn't answer.

'Was. Past tense.' The girl's voice cracks. 'She died. Last winter. The first night of winter. She was coming to ride your bus one last time. She didn't make it. I'm here because she couldn't be.'
