The Last Bus on Marrow Street

A woman boards at the next stop. Young. Soaked. Broken umbrella. She sits two rows back. 'Driver, did you see anyone trying to catch this bus? Around Elm Street?' My stomach drops. How does she know?

'Is that her?' She points at her phone. Older photo. Woman in red, 1995 stamp on it. Thirty years old. 'She's taken your bus every winter since then. Did you ever notice?'

1995. I do remember something. A woman boarding, looking lost. An accident near Fifth Street that night. The bus delayed. She helped someone. I think it was her. The photo. Her coat. 'Did something happen to her?' The young woman nods. 'That night. That night she made a choice. Every winter after, she came back to that route. I don't know why. She never said.'
