Signal Lake Has No Echo

Mara found an old metal sign half-buried in mud: SWIM TEST AREA. Below it, someone had spray-painted three words: THEY STILL COUNT. "Count what?" she said. Devon pointed at the water. Tiny bubbles were rising in a perfect line, like footsteps walking out toward the middle.

Mara waded in to her knees, following the line of bubbles. The cold gripped her legs. "Mara, get out," Devon yelled, but his voice made no sound. She kept walking, eyes glassy, until the water reached her chest, then she went under without a splash. The lake closed flat and silent. She was never found.
